In addition, we would like to draw your attention to the following statement on the matter:
Statement by the Spokesperson on capital punishment in Bangladesh
05/11/2014
"We are closely following judicial proceedings in Bangladesh. The
European Union reiterates its strong and absolute opposition to capital
punishment in all cases and under all circumstances. We consider the death
penalty to be a cruel and inhumane punishment, which is not a deterrent to
criminal behaviour and which represents an unacceptable denial of human
dignity. With capital punishment any miscarriage of justice – which can happen
in any legal system – is irreversible. The European Union calls on the
Bangladeshi authorities to stay all pending executions, and establish a
moratorium on the use of the death penalty, as a first step towards its
abolition."

Respected Sir /Madam,
Though what is happening in Bangladesh is its internal matter, yet Pakistan cannot remain divorce from references to 1971 and its aftermath, that it was highly unfortunate that almost 45 years after those tragic chain of events, the Bangladeshi government still seemed to be living in the past and totally ignoring the time tested virtue of forgive and forget. One fails to understand why the Bangladeshi government is hell bent upon digging the graves of the past and reopening old wounds, it seemed obvious to any independent observer that the recent events in Bangladesh were a manifestation of serious political violations, which were being inflicted on JI Bangladesh for events before the independence of Bangladesh. We were deeply saddened to receive this shocking news and believed that the government of Bangladesh had misused the process of law as a political tool against the JI leader. It is requested to take serious steps to stop the death sentence of Ameer of JI Bangladesh.
Regards.
